When I recertified (10 years) as IBCLC this year I had no idea that
the IBCLC Scope of Practice was going to be changed. I am alarmed to
learn that as an IBCLC I can no longer question erroneous information
if it is given by an MD, a common occurrence in my community. I am
concerned that I can no longer recommend alternative therapies,
particularly as there is no definition of *alternative.*
I would like to know why these changes were made. I do not understand
how keeping mothers in ignorance about their situation and letting
them know that alternative therapies are available can possibly help
them and their babies to breastfeed.
