First of all, Debbie, thanks for the forms! They got here just after the
nursing supervisors decided something had to be done - so now I can walk in with
some suggestions.

About overwhelming moms when they call with the ideal:
The policy of responding to mom's feelings "It sounds like you're pretty upset
right now" (or tired, or frustrated) followed by some gently-asked questions (in
fact, one policy I try to follow is 13 questions before giving a response) can
help to resolve a lot of problems.

When we answer too quickly the moms feel we are just giving them a canned answer
- they might as well call one of those computerized medical information lines!
When we ask questions, they realize we are trying to understand their particular
situation. And it actually saves us time because we may be answering the wrong
question. (Yesterday the question was, where can I get a pump? - But the
"real" question was: I've been breastfeeding non-stop for 2 1/2 weeks and my
nipples are sore and I'm tired and my family wants me to get some sleep and....
you get the picture)
