I have read the article Mr. Flack wrote for WAVE3 and emailed him that he
needs to put a present day positive spin on this tragedy and visit a NICU where
Moms are encouraged to provide breastmilk for their child and kangaroo care is
initiated. He should talk with an IBCLC who works with these families and
show how the teaching in the last years has changed and continues to emphasis the
parents helping getting their babies well and keeping them safe after
discharge.
As we all know a nine week premie has many issues and they follow them home
and challenge families for many years. In this day and age of increasing
multiples and babies in NICU we need to embrace the breastfeeding mother as part of
the team of people who work hard to make these infants well.
This person has an opportunity to help get the word out that Breastfeeding is
Best and that for a premature infant it is essential.
I think that possibly when this family were in the NICU situation that these
parents might have more excluded than included in the decision and caretaking
of their child.
They might also be more from the mind set that whatever the docs said "goes"
and they might not have been even considering breastfeeding especially not a
premie.
This is a very complex case and we need to try to influence what we can and
encourage this media person to take the story to another level and impact in a
positive way so we see fewer and fewer Ashley stories.
What if breastpump companies made a "highly prized take home bag with a huge
discount on buying or renting a pump for a NICU baby" as opposed to a take
home bag with any formula. What if local eateries would include a free dinner
for a family under pressure who might not get out for another few months...we
could be so imaginative,,,
