I have been asked to present a short piece at a Ministry of Health workshop
next week on ways that HIV+ mothers could "treat" their expressed breastmilk
(to reduce the risk of HIV transmission) before feeding it to their babies,
e g by heat, cold or standing at room temperature. I would like to contact
the HMBANA and wonder if there is an e-mail address for them?? I am
particularly interested in finding out more about a presentation by JS
McDougal on "Pasteurization of human breast milk and its effect on HIV
infectivity" which was given at the annual meeting of the Human Milk Banking
Association of North America, Lexington, Ky, October 15, 1990. Does anyone
have a copy of the full text of this presentation, or an address for this
researcher? Also any other information or ideas that would be helpful? As
background, 23% - 33% of mothers delivering babies at 4 clinics in Harare
from May 1994 to June 1995 were found to be HIV+ and the cost of formula
feeding one baby at today's prices would amount to 74% of the minimum wage.
So any thoughts would be appreciated too.
