Baby is gaining well with shields; won't nurse without. Nursing feel
tolerable with shields; painful without. Baby can't turn head easily.
Sounds like torticolis, perhaps requiring more physical therapy than one CS
session has provided. Such infants are tight, clenched nursers and cause
incredible pain to their mothers. I have a dedicated mom with 4 mo. old
twins, one of whom has just been diagnosed by Kay James (speech path from
Houston who has spoken at ILCA before) with sensory problems and high tone.
Kay has referred her to a PT here in Austin to do the on-going work. The
other twin is a great nurser and while both are well-growing, the little
girl with the tone problems keeps mom's nipples blistered and excruciatingly
painful. Shields have helped but only marginally. It's so bad she can only
nurse her 3x a day and bottle feed pumped milk for the other feeedings or
her pain is so intense we'd lose this lactation for both babies. I WISH just
wearing shields would allow her to nurse. The use of a crutch is never
ideal. We all wish that interventions weren't necessary and could be
discontinued immed. but if you can't walk at all without a crutch, aren't
you glad you've got one?
