Greetings from SE Florida
I am a highly thankful and sorrowful person tonite as I view the devastation
from nearby SW Fl and hope to remind those who may be there to do what I did
after Andrew....get all new Moms to breastfeed because it is far easier to
hydrate one Mom than a Mom and a baby when there is no refrigeration. I also had
a relactation tent with the Florida National Guard for a short time I was with
a group. I hope anyone who is headed there to help remembers this.
I really wanted to address the concept of the Nestle boycott. I have tried
my best over the course of 20+ years to maintain that within my family...yes,
my children didn't drink Quick and eat Crunch bars at least in front of
me...Taster's Choice became a thing to be avoided. More recently at work we have a
pet project of selling candies and snacks at the nurses' station for us and our
visitors that helps to support an Employees' Activities Committee. This fund
pays for different things like picnics and a Christmas party. I have become
the conscience of those buying the items we sell by noting we should be
boycotting it because Nestle undermines breastfeeding in the world. And when they
have put Nestle products up for salewe are contributing to the problem in a
small part. Not one of my coworkers knew about the boycott or what it stood for.
I am not a bra burning hippy, but a 57 year old granny. The response I got
from one was its cheaper, so we make more money. "More money at what cost???"
So out came the soapbox. I guess they all got tired of me harping and
advocating they read "Milk, Money and Madness", because for the last 5 months ....No
Nestle products have been on the counter top. I told them if they are part of
problem they can't be part of the solution. They are all now my
Breastfeeding Taskforce. I just might give them copies of the book for Christmas. What
does it mean to us in SFl ....we are but a speck on the globe...if they take it
home and it flows to other homes it may generate conversation and that may
generate thoughts and they may lead to further action....remember its water that
divided Northern Captive Island into two islands last night...water that made
the Grand Canyon and a thought might make a difference....just like water or
even better breastmilk.
Yes, it is getting more difficult to find a non Nestle company, since they
seem to be buying up all the traditional companies...and they probably own the
the companies that make the generic products...Hate to think like that.
Fondly,
Leanne Jewell, RN,C, LCCE, FACCE
