Dear Dr. Jenny Thomas,
What a wonderful detailed post you gave us. (I am very behind in my LACTNET
mail.) People like you add so much to the lactation community, welcome and
thank you.
I recall reading some of Barbara Wilson-Clay's emails about working with
physicians and she states it so well. I highly recommend folks look back in the
archives to review.
Jenny, your professor described it well about 50% of what we learn will
either be wrong or outdated.
I try to approach others regarding breastfeeding information with the idea I
have something to share.
I think we do a better service to parents and health care providers if we
approach all with an open mind and good will. Being negative just doesn't open
the doors to others.
There was a good article in the Boston Globe yesterday, March 19 in the
Health and Science section. The author was talking about physicians not taking a
careful, in-depth history when a patient comes in with a complaint. Instead
the physician has an idea of what they think is going on based on something
said by the patient but missed the bigger picture.
I only bring this up that we are all human and we can all work on our
listening and communications skills to further our cause and hopefully help many.
