Thank you, thank you , thank you to everyone who
replied to this thread!

Thanks Chris for your reminder that HMF is for
preemies. So my question now is, if mom is told that
she needs to increase calories... would it be better
to do the skimming of cream from one feed to add to
another and then add powdered formula to the resulting
skim milk? Or simply add powdered formula to *all*
feeds?

For Ann:
This baby saw a cardiologist at 2 weeks and has an
appointment to see him again in January. I will ask
the ped about this along with the swallowing study.
Baby is on no medications at this time.

For Dee:
Mother is feeding by bottle with preemie nipples
(extremely fast flow) which they gave her in the
hospital. I got her some medium flow nipples tonight
for her to try.
Her flanges are 30mm and fit nicely when pumping. I
had observed pumping and given pumping tips.
I agree with your observation regarding *pushing*; but
of course that wasn't what I really meant. So now
I'll try to say what I mean ;-)
I haven't been strongly encouraging mom to breastfeed
at every feeding. You did answer my worrys though and
I appreciate it.

For Carol:
We have been doing AC/PC wts throughout and baby isn't
transferring much at all from breast. Last session
was 8ml in over 15 minutes, with compression and
shield.
We haven't been using Dancer hold. Don't ask me why,
that will be corrected. I do remember trying that on
the first visit, but on that visit baby didn't latch
and I guess I forgot about it after that. We have
been using a cross cradle position because that is
what mom prefers, but she may be open to other
positions.
I'll ask Ped about raising O2 during feeds... I'm not
sure how the numbers you gave apply to high altitudes,
I do know that O2 sats here are not expected to be as
high as at sea level anyway. Feeding is when baby
fails the O2 weaning trials.

I can't remember who mentioned galactagogues, but I
have mentioned tinctures and herbs to mom (she's not
thrilled with the idea), but not the other foods, at
least until today (she is very happy with the
suggestions). Thanks for reminding me.

You've given me a lot to think about and work with and
I appreciate it.

Regards,
Cindi Swisher, RN, IBCLC
