Thanks to all who responded positively to Amy Lewis, the junior nursing
student who posted inquiries on hospital practices re: waking babies to
feed. Our students are working very hard at putting theory into practice
and looking at policies/practices critically.

I would like to respond to a post which was rather critical in an effort to
clarify any misunderstanding. I am Amy's instructor and do the primary
instruction on breast-feeding in class. I feel that the students in my class
receive accurate, appropriate information on all aspects of
breast-feeding which is supported by my research activities in this area
as well as my knowledge and years of practice which also has
contributed to my recent certification. This information is also reinforced
in the clinical setting.

I stress the importance of research findings in the development of
practice and policy regarding breast-feeding and promote the student's
use of current, professional literature to support their practice. This is an
important focus throughout the four to five years of the students'
baccalaureate education in Nursing. The students make an brave effort
to do just that, but being developing professionals, may not have a
broader knowledge of the many references available. On the surface, it
is difficult to distinguish what in most appropriate in this particular
specialty. This ability to be selective develops over time as was the
case for my own development of a knowledge base in breastfeeding.
Certainly, their text is a prime source of information which is
supplemented by other appropriate references, some of which Amy
cited.

The student who posted the question about waking babies did so as a
reflection of her interest and desire to learn more about breast-feeding
from what has been presented to her as a wonderful group of
professionals. I feel it is our responsibility to nurture and support this
interest and promote/provide guidance in the quest for
information/education. Many of you did just that and I am very grateful.
In addition to providing the requested information, you also provided a
wonderful role model of professionalism and caring.

I, for one, am happy to be such an integral part of the breast-feeding
education for these students and would be happy to work with any of
them with new breast-feeding mothers in the hospital or the community.

Thanks again!
