I can't agree more with the post calling new mothers to advocate for
themselves to avoid negative hospital-based delivery experiences.  It is
important for a new mother to find out what all her childbirth options are,
decide what style she prefers, then find a health care provider who supports
her decission.
        I had two children in a lovely little hospital here in Lebanon, NH.
The rooms were very comfortable and homey.  The staff was knowledgable,
polite, and respectful.  I had a birth plan, as well as a back up plan with
my OBGYN.  I had toured the birthing center beforehand and knew where to go,
what to bring, and, to an extent, what to expect.  My doctor was both a
competent physician and a nurturing person.
        I realize that not all mothers can be this lucky, but with the right
planning and with an understanding that it's OK to ask for the things you
want and need from your doctor and nursing staff, I believe many bad
hospital experiences can be avoided.
