I agree with all of your post, Ellen, but wanted to highlight this:

Ellen <[log in to unmask]> wrote:some feel the cross cradle hold is the bane of society, and some say ONLY the cross cradle can answer the needs of a good latch. I don't believe either of these to be true. I follow my instincts to think that "nature" would be best, the cradle hold SHOULD work for all, but I can't sit back and see a mom struggling with a screaming babe in arms, after a few initial tries, and will then suggest something else. Mom knows best, how she is comfortable and what will enable her to carry on without getting despondent and just give up. Our experience is what enables us to see how SHE is reacting to what we suggest.
For some moms this position just looks so very uncomfortable, their arms seem to only be able to resemble chickenwings and their backs hurt by just looking at it. The best position is were mom and baby are comfortable and baby is able to freely move his head back and mom is painfree. Look at mom and baby, read their bodylanguage and have confindence in mom's own ability to recognse what works best.

Warmly greeting and wishing all of you all the best for this new year,

Gonneke, IBCLC, LLLL in southern Netherlands, where the streets turned red this night
