Dear Lactnet Friends:

When I was born, in 1950, formula preparation was a long, arduous process
that had to be done regularly until the baby was eating solids. It was a
home canning process that had to be done safely, so the formula was sterile.

Then industry stepped in with its prepared products that saved women
countless hours of tedious and repetitious work. For over 2 generations
now, the home canning process to make infant formula has been a relic of
the past, forgotten.

Until now, after more babies have died from unsafe processing.

But now, women view the correct processing as punishment because of a
general ignorance about the need for safety in home canning.

This is where we have to be patient and helpful.

I've watched 2 new DVDs about preparing powdered formula according to WHO
guidelines. It is an awful process: long, painstaking, and
complicated.....and, necessary, so that babies don't get sick or die.

One DVD comes from Mark-It TV in the UK; the other comes from Healthy
Children, in the USA.

warmly,
