There have been lots of good assessments and suggestions made already.
Lactnet is such a wonderful resource!

No one has yet mentioned another intervention that may help this mother and
baby who have had such a traumatic start with breastfeeding. This mother
must be exhausted and frightened and grieving the loss of what she had
imagined her first days with her new baby would be like. I would try to
insure that she is nurtured and cared for and "mothered" in a way that
allows her to regain her strength and sense of competence and confidence as
a mother. Lots of skin-to-skin time with her baby can only help to build
her supply and her baby's interest and their chance to get to know and bond
with each other. This is one situation where I would think really good
hired or volunteer help to take care of everything else (meals, shopping,
cleaning, monitoring visitors, answering the phone and doorbell) so that
priorities for rest and healing and getting breastfeeding going better are
respected. And so this family unit (Dad, too) can begin to recover from the
scary situation they've had to live through.
