RECALL OF INFANT & CHILD VACCINE

Doses of a common vaccine recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) have been voluntarily recalled, due to concern that they
may be contaminated with bacteria. Last week the CDC and FDA announced that
1.2 million doses of the Haemophilus influenza type b vaccine (Hib),
recommended for infants and toddlers starting at age two months, are
affected. According to CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding, "Right now this is
not a health-threatening situation for children. We have had no cases of
reported injury or adverse events with the Hib vaccine involved in this
recall." Children who recently received the Hib vaccine could show symptoms
at the injection site, such as local skin bumps or abscesses. Parents who
suspect symptoms should contact their healthcare provider. The Hib vaccine,
which is not related to the flu vaccine, prevents serious bacterial
infections, including meningitis and pneumonia. CDCs recommendation of the
Hib vaccine for all children und er age five has not changed. For CDC's Q&A
on the recall, go to
