Debbie,

You asked how long HIV and hepatitis can stay alive on pump parts. The
answer is "we don't know". I have heard several months.

Back to my patients question: should I have my baby tested for HIV and
hepatitis since I used an open system pump from a second hand store?

I discussed with her how remote the possibility was and how much more likely
cross contamination would occur from the informal "milk sharing" that is
going on these days . but am thinking a blood test will give her the 100%
peace of mind she is needing.
