Wasn't the point of the oxytocin injection that, in the olden days when no one was bfdg, moms needed it to help the uterus contract and avoid too much bleeding?
Why are we still giving it to moms whose babies are latched on and bfdg as Morgan's baby was? Just a leftover tradition?

Debbi Heffern, who was also the recipient of oxytocin shots and doesn't understand. But, by golly, once those babies were out, I was so tired that a little shot was the least of my worries. Oh, the things we didn't know. . .

Subject: Re: High hemoglobin levels when clamping the cord late(r)

It's a very easy matter, at least in the UK, to request the oxytocin
injection waits until after the cord has died. I requested it, and was
not an 'informed' birthing mother in that sense, it was just a
suggestion I'd agreed with from a mainstream pregnancy and birth book -
Sheila Kitzinger if I recall correctly. There was no dissension from
anyone, which gave me the impression that mothers do ask this often
enough for it not to be of note. So mine was latched on and
breastfeeding before the cord was cut... now I know what a miracle this
was, I marvel at my utter naivety and, well, ignorance! :-)

> The reason for this statement is to avoid the transfer of different drugs, (administered to the mother during childbirth), to the newborn via the Umbilical Cord. The practice of administering drugs to the mother during childbirth is common in most developed countries. In developing countries or home childbirth, when no drugs are used, it is suggested that clamping be delayed, even until cessation of peristaltic movements in the cord."
