Dr. Tom, using scent to confound a nursing goat, sheep, horse, dog, cat
or cow is a tried a true method of taking care of orphaned young; however, I
think I would be cautious of recommending mentholatum. On delicate skin it
can be painful. On goats, dogs and mares I have successfully used vanilla,
lavender or rose scent (no science, just found whatever we had that was
strong scented!) Perhaps the lactnetters who know about aroma therapy could
suggest alternatives?

Given the research that was published a few years ago in Pediatrics, perhaps
garlic scent would work?
