Hey Jeanette, I'm going to disagree with you now LOL
Preferably, the priority should be that the mother develops her knowledge
of
breastfeeding gradually, over time through observation of and interaction
with other breastfeeding women. Breastfeeding really is not something that
is best learnt about in books or through courses or the educated
ministrations of lactation consultants. The last thing we need is for
mother's wisdom to be medicalised and expertised out of their hands....even
by lactation consultants. This is where all who are involved in
breastfeeding should be using their interaction with mothers and mothers to
be to encourage them to develop contacts with breastfeeding women, whether
informally or via any of the mother-to-mother breastfeeding support
organisations. The evidence that peer support is the most effective
predictor of breastfeeding confidence and hence persistence is
overwhelming.
That is what all mums need!
