Catherine Watson Genna writes that she most often sees mothers hold babies
too far away to get a proper latch.
I see the opposite: they are so fixated on having the baby close,
front-to-front, that the baby can't latch because it is already smushed into
the breast before it has even opened its mouth. They need just that tiny
amount of space that allows maneuvering before being brought so close in.

Also, the notion of front-to-front has somehow in my unit been interpreted
as baby lying in a perfectly level position with its front toward the
mother's. I can't find any sources who mention that as a feature of correct
latch either, but many people here make a huge point out of holding baby
level. The problem is that a lot of babies will refuse to feed unless their
head is noticeably higher than their stomach.
