Permission to Post for Discussion: I've met a new mother who has had her employer-sponsored health insurance company deny her request (and written prescription) for any breastpump for “religious reasons”. This is the very first time I that I have ever heard of such a scenario. Now, we are both confused… Initially, the insurance company had verified that she had coverage for a pump and how to go about getting it (doctor’s prescription, -> which durable medical equipment company to contact, brands/models available, etc). But, when the DME company submitted the pre-authorization request, the claim was denied. Mother then called insurance company back, obviously frustrated, to be told that her employer had opted out of breastpump benefits within their policy because of their own religious objections similar to contraception coverage (which they also exclude in their policy coverage for employees). Odd irony, "We won't provide birth control and we won't support you when your family expands." Has anyone heard of a similar situation? Thoughts? Thank you, --Shannon, RN, IBCLC, Bryan, TX
