I also remove those mittens whenever I can telling moms that only babies
who are left in the nursery scratch themselves as they cry out for their
mothers.  I proceed to point out that the babies who are in mom's arms
in the breastfeeding room are all calm and quiet as opposed to those in
the nursery who are screaming.  If you don't want your baby to scratch
his face, keep him with you and hold him as much as possible.  Babies
need to feel their hands and  suck their fists and be close to mom.
