Hi ALL:

I have a few burning questions for all those bright minds out there.
1. Has anyone heard of putting sugar on cracked nipples??? Some of the public
health nurses in my area are advocating this - they say they picked it up at a
Carol Hamilton workshop. Doesn't bacteria like sugar,,, and yeast... ? They
are swearing it works. The other thing I am hearing is vaseline - can't imagine
getting a mouthful of petroleum gel is good for anyone???

2. I have recently helped a mom with VERY forceful letdown. Baby gained 2 lbs
in the first 8 days of life - but by day 12 was refusing the breast 15 seconds
into the feed. Beautiful latch, suck suck swallow,... swallow swallow ...help I
am drowning and screamm - pulled off and MILK EVERYWHERE!... I suggested an
upright position - baby sitting facing or side lying - and gently massaging
breast to stimulate first letdown - letting milk exit breast (no baby attached)
to decrease the pressure inside the breast - then attach baby . Breast feed the
same breast for two feeds. The first time she massaged to stimulate let down
she collected 4 ounces. She lets down from both breasts at the same time as
well - I have never seen anything like it- so INCREDIBLE milk supply - she
breast fed her first for 6 months then he 'weaned himself'. So we have two
problems - too much milk - and jet stream let down. Any other suggestions - she
is hanging in there but getting tired. Kathleen A told me to get her to
recline to BF - we tried this but baby didn't seem to appreciate our efforts. I
am really afraid this baby will wean as she doesn't like being terrified
everytime she eats.... Oh - baby does well at night (side lying)- but can't
handle the day feeds. Anxiously awaiting your expert advise.
