I have received several calls about rabies over the years and what I
have learned is that human milk is not considered a route of
transmission of the disease, so it is fine to breastfeed if a mother
is bitten by a rabid or potentially rabid animal. And the shots are
used due to a low bioavailability of the drug, it is not
contraindicated in breastfeeding and it is doubtful that there is any
risk to the baby. If left untreated, rabies can be fatal.
