Subject: [LACTNET] danger of not menstruating

Dear Friends,
I've been having an interesting conversation with a group of women and a few issues came up which I would love to get your input on. One of woman is nursing a two year old and taking a progesterone only mini pill. She has not gotten a period since before her becoming pregnant and is concerned that perhaps it is unhealthy for a woman to go so long with out menstruating. Another woman suggested that menstruation is protective against certain cancers. I remember once something on lactnet that seemed to suggest the same thing but can't remember what the topic was. Does anyone know anything about this subject?
Thank you so much,
Chayn Fogelman, winding down the holiday season in Israel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear friends,
menstruation is not the normal state for a female body. The menstrual
cycle is what I refer to as ''the short cycle'' as opposed to the
normal cycle of ovulation - conception - pregnancy - childbirth -
lactation. Menstruation is, in a biological sense, what happens if the
intended action (conception) fails and a new round  of opportunity must
be prepared. In fact, having lots of menstrual cycles in the
reproductive years is a risk increasing factor for various cancers of
the female reproductive system. That is one of the reasons, for
example, why breastfeeding protects against breastcancer.
Warmly,
Gonneke, IBCLC, LLLL in southern Netherlands, counting CERPs for recert. this month
