I have been nomail for a long time, but am changing my status for help on
this question. I had a mom write to me worried that she should not eat
honey while she is breastfeeding. Seems a 7 mo. old baby was diagnosed with
botulism from honey the mother ingested. At first I questioned the accuracy
of this report she obtained from her sister-in-law (nurse at the hospital).
This happened at Riley Children's Hospital in the Indianapolis, IN area. I
have never seen a warning against nursing moms eating honey (matter of
fact, I often enjoyed it myself while nursing with my herbal tea). Here is
her response after I requested that she verify the details:

<<Well, I talked to my sil tonight and found out more about the case
with the possible botulism through breastmilk. My sil is a EEG tech
and she performed the test on the baby. She said about 20 doctors
were in and out looking at him. She said he just layed there. He is
on a ventilator. So, it seems as though it must be true.

So, what about honey during pregnancy? Is it okay?>>

Obviously missing are the details of "what test?" and the fact that he is
on a vent. doesn't meant that he got botulism poisoning from honey his mom
ingested. Anyone know anything about the possibility of such a thing? This
story just doesn't ring true with me, but I may just be stupid.

Thanks in advance,
Laurie Moody, CLC
