<Does anyone else feel that referring to breastfeeding supporters as
"lactivists" is completely condescending?>

Absolutely! Throughout history the first way to devalue any group of people is to give them a condescending name (ethnic nicknames are a good example). It takes away individuality and allows others to feel superior. Not sure there is much we can do about it, except to object to the term whenever we can, and to continue to let our WORK be the true reflection of who we are.
On that same note, I would also like to chime in with my objection to "nipple rape." Doesn't that make the person who did the damage a "nipple rapist?" Don't we hate to be referred to as "nipple nazi's?" I think we need to show the same sensitivity when these inflammatory phrases are used towards others as we do when they are directed at LCs. Having BEEN a postpartum nurse and now working daily with postpartum nurses, I know that the techniques used are not always the best. Just another example of why LCs are SO needed in the hospital setting, not only for seeing moms but for education of staff. Prenatal education is also a must...mom's need to be empowered to know that the kind of behavior this woman experienced is unacceptable, and should be reported.
