Hi. Our two general surgeons (only ones in town) feel VERY strongly about
moms waiting 24 hours after surgery and pumping/dumping before
breastfeeding. The research didn't convince her and her comment was that
that research won't help her in a lawsuit if baby is affected by meds in
breastmilk (for up to 18 years). I think she is under the impression that
breastfeeding after surgery is a new idea and that almost all hospitals
stick with the 24 hour rule. She doesn't want to take the risk and try out
a new idea that nobody else is doing.

A pediatrician that is on my side suggested I find out what other hospitals
are doing. If your hospital follows the "breastfeed after surgery as soon
as mom feels up to it" guideline could you please email me privately. I
would like to go to the meeting with a list of hospitals--especially
hospitals in Missouri or surrounding states--but anywhere you are will be
very helpful also. :-) Thank you.

Christine Lichte LLL Leader, CBE, waiting patiently for Oct. 17!
