This is a dangerous practice and the mother needs to be so informed.  If the mother must use artificial infant milk, of course the better option would be to give any available mother's milk to the baby first, then to give screened human donor milk if available, and thirdly, to give fully reconstituted AIM ("formula") in order to meet the baby's nutritional and metabolic needs.
