About twelve years ago, when I was training WIC peer counsellors, one
of our trainees told a very interesting story. She had her first baby
when she was single and nineteen years old. At that time she was
living in Buffalo, NY, where the WIC agency simply ASSUMED that every
mother would be nursing her baby. Nobody ever asked her if she was
going to bottle feed or breastfeed, they just TAUGHT her what she
needed to know. As a result, she nursed her first child for two years!
I am sure that there were pregnant women there who refused to
breastfeed. However, it was up to them to make a conscious decision to
give their babies inferior nourishment. Nobody forced them to nurse,
but at least they were making informed choices.
