My name is Jane Fogdall. I am an RN and work as one of 3 Board Certified
LCs at a hospital in the Seattle area. I have been reading Lactnet
postings with great interest for a number of years, but now it's time to
jump in and get to know some of you.
My 17-year old son was recently diagnosed with Crohn's disease. As you can
imagine, I took this rather personally since I exclusively breastfed
Justin for 6 months, then continued breastfeeding him until he was 2-1/2
years.
My first thought was to purchase donor milk to help heal his gut, but I
got to thinking that I might be able to provide it myself. I have been
communicating with Lenore Goldfarb who has an excellent set of protocols
for inducing lactation and relactating. She has given me great hope that
even though I am just shy of 50 years old, I can still wake up my sleeping
breast tissue and call it into service once again! I feel I have enough
knowledge to get started but I am desperate to know of any research that
is available on the use of donor milk for the purpose of treating
inflammatory bowel disease. There is a wealth of information on how
breastfeeding helps prevent it, of course. Anyone? I am also willing to be
involved in research for those of you studying relactation efforts (among
the perimenopausal!) and for the clinical uses of breastmilk.
Many thanks!
Jane Fogdall,BS,RN,IBCLC
