Carissa,

Prednisone is a steroid and can definitely predispose someone to a yeast
infection-- that is a classic risk factor. Steroids suppress the immune
system, and in doing so interfere with the body's ability to balance
yeast and bacterias. The steroid will clear her system pretty quickly,
but that probably isn't going to solve the problem now that yeast
overgrowth has taken hold. If she is having nipple or breast yeast, that
needs to be treated along with any other break-out sites. If it is
really entrenched, diflucan might help her get over the hump more
quickly. I usually recommend that topical treatments be continued for a
week past the cessation of all symptoms. In addition, if mom does indeed
have nipple yeast, baby should probably be treated to avoid
re-infection.
