Yes, this would be a very troubling encounter. Remember, the baby may be
suffering from lack of calories, but the baby may also have a metabolic or
other illness. I would definitely contact the pediatrician and the family
for follow-up.
I have seen babies who are doing marginally well, but the doctor or other
healthcare provider reassures the mother and then THE NEXT FOLLOW-UP IS NOT
SOON ENOUGH.
I believe someone else posted a similar observation. In my part of the
world, the baby *might* be seen at 1 wk but usually 2 wks, then again at 2
months of age. So there is a big gap during that
time, and alot can happen if things are not going very well. I think you
know that I do breastfeeding clinic follow-up targeting day 4 or 5 of life.
It is important to develop a plan and KEEP HAVING FOLLOWUP every day or two,
if needed for worrisome signs, because the next followup would be at 2 wks.
