The first thought that comes to mind when mom has sore nipples suddenly, with
an older baby, is that she might be pregnant! And, of course, that could be
the case even if she has not yet had a period. A good friend complained of a
chomping, annoyed one year old nursling and mom's nipples were ravaged and had
a sun-burned feeling. She had not yet had a period, but was indeed three
months pregnant by the time she decided to find out for certain (on my
recommendation). She is due in June, and her nursling weaned last month. He
also had very low weight gain in the last few months before she figured out
that she was pregnant.
Also, has anyone else ever read or heard that there is an *enzyme* present
in the saliva of teething babies that can make a mother's nipples sore??? I
read it a while back, and it made sense to me. This enzyme has to be
"caustic" enough to help a tooth break through the gums, and therefore can
lead to nipples with that sun-burned feeling for a few days or weeks, until
either the tooth comes thru or mom's nipples get used to the sensation.
