Cathy: Not only do babies peck their way down or throw themselves down to
the nipple, but I had one little guy just about cause both his mother and
myself to have heart failure by throwing himself backward from the waist up
from his prone position between her breasts, angle himself toward her left
breast (his choice) and then launch himself forward with his mouth wide open.
He landed on her nipple (good aim!), closed his mouth and immediately began
vigorous sucking. We were left stunned and speechless. When the mom
finally got over her surprise, her only comment was: "WOW!" I was still
having visions of his little body flying backwards end over end and off the foot
of the bed, so strong was his backward lunge. One reason some babies may
be going thru "baby mad" is because mom (or helper) "decides" for the baby,
which breast he is going to nurse at that particular feeding attempt. As an
experiment once (with mom's permission), I moved a baby from the breast he
was wiggling down towards to the opposite breast. He screamed until we
moved him back to the original breast. I guess he was telling us he wanted
the chocolate milk side that time, not the white!
