>Subject: Study: Breast-Feeding Ups Death Risk in HIV Mothers
LACTNET Digest - 24 May 2001 (#2001-293)In my daily news I found this =
article from Reuters. Here is a snippet. Below is the link to the =
whole article.<

I paste in below another part of what Reuters said. I feel very
uncomfortable with having just the conclusions of the article quoted without
noting that the editorial was pretty questioning about the validity of the
findings.

Dr. Marie-Louise Newell, of the Institute of Child Health in London, said
further research was needed to confirm the results of the Kenyan study,
which conflict with the findings of a South African study that found no
increase in deaths among HIV nursing mothers.

``I think this paper was brought out prematurely,'' Newell told Reuters.

The overall mortality in the breast-feeding group was about 10 percent,
which is not a surprising rate over a two-year period, she said.

``I don't think these results call for any changes in the current
recommendations about breast-feeding,'' she added.

Indeed, the tone of the editorial was very interesting -- treating this
study with some scepticism becasue the data on women's health conflicts with
that reported by the Coutsoudis research team. If anyone goes to The
Lancet, do read the editorial as well.
