The Chinese acupuncturist in Seattle we saw 15 years ago for my daughters
ringing in the ears after a course of tetracycline had a book of color
photographs of nothing but tongues with all sorts of issues, coatings,
creases, shapes and colors, etc.  It was published in China to help with
diagnosis. 

 

Also a Hungarian language film I watched on the International channel had
two 20-something gals meeting a couple of guys and one of the girls says to
the other, "His tongue is white, he must be sick."

 

It is very common in other countries to be told that a white tongue coating
has a stomach issue.

Antibiotics have changed what color tongues are now.  It is rare to see
someone with a bright pink healthy looking tongue anymore.  Looking at
singers on TV and Oprah, they all seem to have white coated tongues now.

I'm delurking to give a little tongue story.  I'm not absolutely sure about
this, but one time my elderly neighbor looked at my white/dirty white tongue
and said, "You have stomach problems."  She, as well as a few more elderly
people in my building, were doctors in another country.
