Hi, Jean: Thank you for your astute comments on why some mothers cannot do
RPS on themselves. One of the barriers I see is that the length of time
required for successful RPS is not correctly perceived by many. One to
three minutes by the clock is an eternity. I had to have PT on my shoulder
several months ago and the PT told me that I had to "rest" for a full
minute between exercises and he told me to time it by the clock. Why? He
said that most people rest a total of 17 seconds between exercises, as this
is their perception of how long a minute is.
I find myself telling moms lately that neither breastfeeding nor skin-to-
skin is a "timed event". We all seem to be in such a hurry to make
breastfeeding happen, which leads to frantic behaviors on the part of the
mother, baby, and yes, the HCP!
