I received several private posts asking for my references that babies can
show effects from labor drugs for a month, and that's only because the
researchers stopped measuring the babies at 30 days. Here's one of the
better references:

Sepkoski CM, Lester BM, Ostheimer GW, Brazelton TB. The effect of maternal
epidural anesthesia on neonatal behavior during the first month.
Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology, 1992: 34, 1072-80.

That study was published ten years ago. This information should be old news
by now. And Sepkoski's article isn't the only one in print. ONE MORE TIME:
birth drugs and practices affect the baby's ability to feed. Epidural babies
are not sleepy, they're drugged. Stoned. Narcotized. Doped up. Pick another
politically correct euphemism for "drugged" if you wish, but please stop
using the word "sleepy." Sleepy babies wake up and eat quite easily and
frequently.

Maybe if WE in the breastfeeding community use more accurate terminology in
our documentation, we'll be able to increase awareness of what some birth
practices do to breastfeeding mothers and babies. Or is this truly new
information for many breastfeeding advocates?
