Hi Everybody, can you help me? Our NICU director has decided to follow the
recommendations of the cpqcc. We will be freezing breastmilk before feeding
to our under 32 weeks preemies. Does anyone have the practicalities of this
policy already in place? I've searched the archives. Specifically- Do
babies get colostrum while mom's blood is being tested for CMV? (Generally
a 3 day turnaround). What if her milk is more of a transitional milk (say
she were also nursing a sibling)? What kind of information (a handout?) do
you give to the parent explaing all this? Does someone have that handout
already written? How would you ensure that the milk is frozen greater than
24 hours (a labeling system?) If Mom is tested negative on the first go-
round would you continue to test her (weekly?) to see if she has contracted
CMV? What about learning to latch to the breast, practicing during kangaroo
care. Must you wait until 32 weeks? What if the baby got one mouthful of
milk, or one drop? And is the magic cutoff date at 32 weeks or is it 32 and
6/7 weeks.
Sorry this is so long. I am hoping someone has a P&P in place so that we
don't have to reinvent the wheel. Thanks. Aloha from Hawaii.
