I just opened my mail and wanted to share it with you. Last month, I EMd a
letter to Gov. Whitman about the breastfeeding bill there was before her here
in NJ and thought you might be interested in her response. If not, fast
forward : )

<Dear Friend-

Thank you for writing to me about legislation that would address certain
issues surrounding mothers' breast-feeding their babies in public places.

While I applaud the bill's intent to encourage mothers to breast-feed by
helping to end discrimination against women who choose to do so in places of
public accommodation, I conditionally vetoed Senate Substitute for Senate
Bill No. 1212 and Assembly Bill No. 548 on March 20, 1997. I have
recommended that responsibility for primary enforcement of this legislation
be given to local boards of health, rather than to the New Jersey Department
of Helath and Senior Services. In addition, I have recommended the removal
of the provision of the bill that would grant breast-feeding mothers a
specific exemption from jury duty. Mothers who breast-feed their babies can
already receive an exemption from jury duty under the current law's hardship
provision, which also exempts others obligated to care for minor children. I
support the objectives of this bill, and I anticipate the Legislature's
thughtful consideration of my recommended changes.

Again, thank you for writing. Best wishes.

Sincerely yours,
Christine Todd Whitman
Governor>
