At my hospital, they do require an order for NPO, or for feeding, and manner
/ substance of feeding for Level II and Level III babies.
Never heard of it for Level I babies.

I can imagine these are the babies that are whisked right to the NICU and
are under the immediate care of the neo-of-the-day; babies so sick they are
unable to breastfeed immediately. So yes, that would make sense. But to have
the baby's pediatrician have to SIGN an order to feed the normal healthy
newborn would be the height of stupidity as often the baby isn't seen by their
peds until the day after they are born when the doc makes his/her usual rounds.

Methinks there is something not quite complete in the translation here. But
I'll look forward to seeing what the actual order is from JCAHO.

The other thing to consider is that it might be that one inspector thought
this a good idea and suggested to the powers that be that this should be done.
Meaning, it isn't a universal mandate, but a suggestion. If the person to
whom it was suggested didn't tell the JCAHO inspector that was a ridiculous
suggestion, then how would the JCAHO inspector, who most likely hasn't
darkened the doors of a hospital in 20 years as staff -- and may have worked in a
medical surgical unit prior to that -- or could be a pharmacist, for pity's
sake, have a clue? So this one does have to be tracked down, and Pat, if it
isn't on their website -- it may not be -- then names have to be obtained and a
letter is written to JCAHO citing name/suggestion/date/hospital and asking
for an explanation -- not to mention a cease & desist and why.
