It makes perfect sense to me that we now must encourage pacifier use to
prevent SIDS. They have written so many books and pushed so hard to encourage
self soothing and putting babies down awake, not letting them breastfeed to
sleep, etc. that the babies have lost the natural protection they may have had.
I am no longer shocked at the information given by the media or the way it
is prevented. Group think and the inability to think about why the
information is being given or what the other views are is typical USA media and sadly
even more typical of USA public in general. (Of course, I too am biased in
favor of co sleeping and breastfeeding so view all information view my own
biased lens...but at least I do read all sides of the informaton.)

It seems to me that if pacifier use and sucking is a SIDS preventative, my
children who have slept attached at a natural nipple must be equally
protected. As my #7 has recently joined us, and is quite sure she must sleep with my
nipple at the very least near her, if not attached, and is where all children
before have always slept, by my side, I don't feel the need to purchase a
latex or silicone replacement.

Take care,
Pam MazzellaDiBosco, IBCLC, RLC--glad to be recovered from my latest birth
and enjoying a newborn in my arms again.
