Anne,

Peter Fleming's research suggests that sucking may trigger an alternate
respiratory center. In the huge CESDI/SUDI study in England, they found that
non-BF Babies suck on their own fingers, their mothers' fingers, and
pacifiers. (BF babies were statistically removed from this analysis). If
they start using pacifiers and mom forgets one night, they are more likely
to die of SIDS because they've forgotten how to suck their own fingers. This
may explain why some BF babies seem to need to suck on mom's breast all
night long.

"Evidence for recommending pacifiers to reduce risk of SIDS is weak (level
III at best). Advice for routine care of healthy babies must have as strong
an evidence base as for babies who are ill, since healthy babies are far
more common and the potential for unsuspected harm is relatively great - a
lesson bitterly learned for infant sleeping position." - Peter Fleming

In any case, pacifier use would only apply to BOTTLEFED babies, not
breastfed. Formula feeding is a risk factor all by itself. Any "rules" that
allegedly keep formula-fed children safer do not automatically apply to
breastfed babies.

Subject: More on pacifiers

Peter Wiess, the presenter from the UK (who
acknowledged that he accepted support from the
pacifier manufacturer who was a vendor MAM or Sassy)
and the US physician, Fern Hauck, had research that
was new... within the past 2-4 years, I believe. The
MD offered guidelines, and suprisingly acknowledged
that when the pacifier fell out, probably within 15
minutes, don't put it back in!? I was very surprised.
So how did it work? No really good answers...just a
couple of theories. This is why it is so distrubing if
the AAP recommends pacifier use.

All the presentation are supposed to be up on the
First Candle website soon.
