Here, we don't show moms how to use those pumps, because that is to implicitly "ok" their use. That includes Ameda pumps, Mi pumps, etc. They can get what they need online. We DO show them how to use reverse pressure softening and hand-expression and if a baby can't breastfeed, mom is separated, we will recommend a hospital-grade pump to rent until everyone is together again. I don't see mothers over=using rental pumps. That monthly bill is a reminder to get back to the baby.

Subject: Re: Medela's Warning For Pumps?

With that in mind...as hospital lactation specialists, we often have mothers who bring their PISs to the hospital and ask us to help them "learn" how to use it. Many times, these PISs have been borrowed from a friend (with no instruction materials). As nurses, we have the ethical duty of *Primum non nocere* or "First, do no harm"...should we refuse to show mothers how to use these Medela pumps because we KNOW there is a problem?
Thanks,
