Hi, all: I recently got back from the LLLI Physician's Seminar in
Orlando. During Dr. James McKenna's talk, there was mention of the recent
warnings about the "dangers of co-sleeping," alluding to the recent AAP
statement and the case reports of babies who had died while in adult beds.
This had recently been discussed on Lactnet.

Interestingly, although the authors' conclusion was that bed-sharing was
not to be recommended, Dr. McKenna pointed out that the vast majority of
the babies who died from being trapped between mattress and headboard,
etc, were in the adult bed *unsupervised* at the time of the incident. I
haven't actually read the article, but if that is the case then there is
little basis from these reported incidents to justify the recommendation
against bed-sharing. Rather, the recommendation should be that if parents
co-sleep with their infants, they should not leave them alone in the bed.

Regards, Alicia Dermer, MD, IBCLC.
