I have been in the hospital twice in the past 2 weeks with respiratory
distress from latex exposures at physical therapy. The latex exercise bands
the therapists use were the culprit. Even though they are not used in my
therapy, the particles from previous sessions cling to the therapist"s hair
and clothes, and apparently over the past 6 months I have developed a
sensitivity enough to trigger severe reactions. The facility is now working
very hard to get rid of the latex products because the Medical DIrector
pointed out that not only was it a hazard to the patients but the therapists
are being sensitized every day. So I would like to remind every one working
in health care facilities that using latex gloves around babies can be the
start of allegic problems for some babies. I have seen the baby photographer
and the hearing screening technician putting a gloved finger in a baby's
mouth to get the baby to calm down. Latex is becoming more and more of a
common allergy and I hope that getting this message out can help slow it
down.
