Aloha,

All right, I decided to add my two cents.

"All children under the age of 2 years should consume whole milk, not =
lowfat milk for adequate calories, and brain development. "

Breastmilk is what is needed for brain growth not cow's milk. Baby cows need
it for their growth. I am not sure cows are very intelligent creatures.

" And why the concern for lactose? Lactose is what we hope =
all babies are getting throughout the first year of life in breast milk, =
so I don't see the concern here with lactose in the milk we drink. "

Yes, breastmilk has 50% more lactose than cow's milk. If a child is still
breastfeeding at one year, why should cow's milk be given? Lactose
intolerance will come after weaning from the breast. My son started to show
signs at age 4 years, two years after weaning from the breast. My children
are half Vietnamese, so this was not a surprise. My husband is lactose
intolerant too. I became lactose intolerant with pregnancy #4. Still am.
We do not have cow's milk in the house, only rice milk. Yes, I loved
dairy---still enjoy icecream even though it pains me. Actually, I rarely
crave it like I did before coming intolerant.

My oldest started cow's milk at age 1 year. She was still nursing, so doctor
said skim milk was fine, which we were drinking. She loves milk. I never
introduced it to #3 and #4. My son, #2 rarely touched it.

I resent having to send a doctor's note into school, so my children don't
have to drink milk. I can make that decision on my own thank you. It's
ironic how milk is pushed in Hawaii with the majority of the population being
Asian and Pacific Islander----cultures who normally would not drink cow's
milk and would develop and intolerance.

I have relented and gave my oldest ,who loves milk, permission to drink it at
school (against my better judgement). My Third started school this year and
started drinking chocolate milk at school----easier than to keep saying "no,
I don't get milk." When I eat lunch with her, I see all the milk that is
wasted. Most of the kids don't drink it or take a couple of sips.

I am sorry, but we are truely brainwashed into believing we need to have milk
for optimum health. It's just not so.

Aloha,
