broken down nipples or wounds, they all use the same universal precations ...keep them clean and dry
The breastfeeding Atlas, second edition "...while it is unnecessary to clean intact nipple skin, often suggest that mothers clean nipple wounds with soapy, warm water once a day. Following breastfeedings, cleansing with normal saline solution or tap water helps prevent pathogens from the baby's mouth from contaminating open nipples fissure. Mothers can irrigate the wounds by squrting from a squeeze bottle. mothers should be instructed to handle thier injured nipples with clean hands....rinsing off the nipples in warm water aftter each feeding is also advised."

ciao,

Barbara,

Your post about deep breast pain and one long episode of mastits was really
interesting. I've been getting some phone calls from patients that are in
similar situations. What you recommend for gentle cleansing of broken down
nipples?
