Dear Lactnet Friends:

In the USA, Infant Formula Council has been busy.

1) They were able to generate enough political pressure to get Joint
Commission to
change the exclusive breastfeeding measure in the Perinatal Care Core
Measure
set.

2) One of their paid consultants co-authored a poorly-done study May 13,
2013,
in Pediatrics that has swept the country. ("Effect of Early Limited Formula
on
Duration and Exclusivity of Breastfeeding in At-Risk Infants: An RCT" doi:
10.1542/peds.2012-2809) This study has led to headlines such as, "Tiny bit
of
formula preserves breastfeeding."

3) I was told today at a hospital where I am teaching that a
formula inservice is saying to staff that Baby Friendly is causing infant
falls.

My question to this international forum is this:

What do BabyFriendly Hospitals do in your country to ensure infant safety
when mothers and term newborns are skin to skin, or breastfeeding in bed
together?

warmly,
