Cynthia asked, "Do any of you act as "The Expert" on a
website in regard to breastfeeding (or anything else,
for that matter), answering questions submitted by
website visitors? If so, I am interested in knowing
the pros and cons of doing such a thing, how much
time you generally spend answering how many questions
per month, "

I do. My own. I've included my sig line below for
that reason.

I'm not a "formal" expert. I get approximately a
question every other day. the first thing I suggest
is contact with LLL and/or an IBCLC who can see them
personally. I answer what I know from what they have
said and ask more questions. Generally, they're
simple questions, but sometimes I get stumped, like
the woman who needed oxytocin nasal spray every time
she fed or she wouldnt' have any MER.

Many of the women are being seen by someone locally
already- Phew!

the drawbacks are that you never really know exactly
what is going on, but have to rely on keystrokes to
get the message.

the plus side is that I get to provide support for
people who clearly need it. I dont' mind holding
hands for a little while in order to help. I think a
lot of women contact me because I'm "safe"- easy, on
their own terms, no obligation, no hassle of dealing
with "an actual human". The biggest plus is hearing
how well the baby is doing some months later.

Of course, I get a little bit of hate mail too, and I
really try to engage the woman in dialogue since one
of my big curiousities in life is "why on earth
wouldnt' you breastfeed your precious baby?!"
